Before using it, I went through a "curing" process. Since then, I have used it several times and it has not cracked or chipped. I think I will get longevity from it. I only use it to melt aluminum, but there is no reason not to use it for most other soft metals (ie brass, copper, bronze). The size meets my needs, you can determine the size you need. When this is used up, I might buy this again.
This crucible is exactly what I expected. I saw some comments mentioning cracking or leaking. I would like to take a moment to help some people. Two things, the first is that graphite crucibles are very susceptible to thermal shock. Second, you should use borax solution the moment you get borax. Borax forms a very thin layer of glass-like material that helps prevent liquid metal from leaking, and if cracks do appear, it will give it a gentle "self-healing".
I use this to melt copper into aluminum bronze. I almost directly blasted it with propane, which put me under a lot of pressure. It went through several meetings and almost doubled the life of my 4 kg crucible. Plus the pour spout has come in handy several times.
After purchasing, I read some bad reviews about the product. I have been worried about it until I use it. I heated it in my foundry until it glowed, and then let it cool by itself. Then I heated it up again and started to melt the can, a whole bag of cans. I have space for at least 15 bags of canned food. Very interesting, I will buy again.
This crucible can meet all my needs. I think this may be a 4KG crucible, but I am not sure. I made sure to heat it in a 300° F oven for an hour to remove the moisture, then heat it to red heat in the foundry, and then cool it as slowly as possible in the foundry overnight to avoid crucibles rupture. So far, I have melted copper and brass in it about 5 times, and it holds up well at temperatures that may exceed 2000° F. For only $20, it can do everything it needs. Will definitely buy again. <o
